Summer Heat Tech Tips

We all know how blistering hot it gets in Louisiana during the summer time. It’s miserable and on top of that getting into your hot car is no fun. You burn your legs on your hot leather seats, you feel like you need to wear oven mitts to touch your steering wheel and your dripping sweat before you even start your car! Summer can be tough on cars, especially during high temperatures when heat can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. As a precaution, these vehicle components should be checked periodically during summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems. All Star Toyota of Baton Rouge is here with some awesome summer tech tips to make sure your car is in perfect condition for the hot Louisiana weather.

Keep your vehicle and your seats cool by parking under the shade. You may risk tree pollen or even bird dropping on your car, but at least it will be cool! If there is no shade, then park with the sun beating down into the rear window rather than the front to avoid the steering wheel and front seats from getting hot! Also, if you have a sunshade, use it! Protect your legs and bum from burning on the leather seats. A sunshade looks a like huge piece of aluminum foil that covers your windshield and will reflect the sun from entering your vehicle.

Oil is the lifeblood of your car. It keeps hardworking engine parts running clean, smooth and cool. Most owner’s manuals suggest that you change your oil and oil filter every 7,500 miles. All Star Chevrolet Technicians suggest every 3,000 miles or three months. The fact is, most of us do a lot of heavy driving during the summer when an engine is more likely to overheat. So at least check your oil before you head out on that road trip with the family.

  • To check your oil, let your car run for a few minutes, then park it on a level surface and shut off the engine. Open the hood and locate the oil dipstick. You’re looking for two things here: the level of oil and how the oil looks. If you’re low on oil, you can either add another quart or simply change the oil completely. The oil should look brownish yellow and clean on the stick. If the oil is a dark color or there’s a lot of dirt and grime in it, then you definitely need an oil change and oil filter replacement.

Always be prepared for any situation! With the summer heat always being harsh on your vehicles tires, engine, and brakes, you’re going to want to carry some tools with you. Our technicians recommend carrying a life hammer, socket and screwdriver set, jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, tire inflator/sealer, flashlight, and a tow strap in the back of your vehicle. You never know what the heat can do to your vehicle and it’s best to be prepared.
